Periodontal diseases are inflammatory diseases affecting the gums and other tissues supporting the gums. Periodontal diseases are responsible for 60% of tooth loss in adults.
When teeth are not cleaned properly, food residues accumulated on them and between teeth produce bacteria. This formation, which we call bacterial plaque, initiates tooth decay and gingivitis (gingivitis). An inflamed gum is red, tends to bleed and causes a foul smell in the mouth. Over time, the minerals in saliva precipitate on the bacterial plaque, forming tartar. If this calculus and inflammation are not removed by treatment, it causes the gums to recede, thereby reducing the supporting bone tissue and causing the teeth to wobble and fall out (periodontitis).
Healthy gums are light pink in color, firmly adhered to the tooth and bone, and have a shiny and slightly rough appearance.
The treatment of gingival diseases in the early stage is usually tartar removal and root surface smoothing. These treatments are performed with the help of various hand tools, ultrasonic devices and laser. Advanced peridontal diseases are treated with surgical interventions.
Periodontal diseases are not only caused by inadequate dental hygiene;
- Physiological conditions such as pregnancy, puberty
- In systemic diseases such as diabetes, cancer
- Long-term use of certain medications
It can occur genetically.
